About
My name is Andrew Spang and I created this page as a resource to explore, learn about, and provide a resource for music educators who want to use technology to enhance their instruction. I am the Music Technology Representative to the Howard County Music Leadership Team. In addition, I have a few other hats: I am the Director of Bands at Folly Quarter Middle School (Ellicott City, MD) and the Director of Music at Westminster United Methodist Church (Westminster, MD), where I direct the Chancel Choir and administer the music program. I play tuba with the Lyric Brass Quintet and and tuba and bass trombone with the Soulful Symphony. I have performed, toured and/or recorded with the Eastman Wind Ensemble, Eastman Trombone Choir, Baltimore Symphony, and Handle Choir of Baltimore.
I hold degrees in tuba performance from the Eastman School of Music (MM/PRL) and The Boston Conservatory (BM), and a masters in education from Western Maryland (McDaniel) College.
I was honored by being selected as the Outstanding Music Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008 by the Maryland Music Educators Association.
I own a music publishing company, Lyric Brass Publishing, and do a lot of arranging and a little composing. I have produced many CDs, from recording, digital editing, mastering, original artwork, graphic design and production, of all sorts: band, jazz, contemporary Christian, bell choir, and brass chamber music. I have used these skills to produce CDs of my school ensembles and students, too.
I regularly use Finale and Sibelius, and ProTools, Digital Performer, and Audacity, among others. When teaching or preparing materials, I regularly use iTunes, iMovie, Adobe Photoshop, QuarkXPress, PowerPoint, MS Word, MS Excel, Toast, QuickTime Plus, SmartMusic, and KeyNote.
